Clubs and Extracurricular Activities

The Sunshine State Readers Book Club is open to third, fourth, and fifth grade students who are interested in reading books from the Sunshine State Young Reader Award’s list. The Book Club is held biweekly from the end of September through February. Students are to read certain books for each meeting date and be ready to discuss and answer questions about those books. This is a great way for students to prepare for the School District’s Online Battle of the Books competition held in January and February.

Coral Reef Chess Nuts is for fourth and fifth grade students who are experienced chess players and already know how to play the game of Chess.  The club begins in November and meets each week on Mondays from 2-3 in the Media Center.  Players are assigned matches each week with other Chess Nuts to strengthen their Chess skills.  The club continues through the end of April and the year culminates with our very own Coral Reef Chess Club tournament, followed by a celebration in early May for all the Chess Nuts that participated.  Chess Nuts learn and practice good sportsmanship and strengthen their chess skills by weekly matches with different players at all different levels.

Chorus is open to fourth grade students in the spring and fifth grade students in the fall.  Members meet weekly on Thursdays from 2:00-3:00.  Members learn how to match pitch with the ensemble while learning provided themed songs. Members will be given the chance to have individual parts in the show such as solos, introducing songs, helping with props, etc...  Chorus gives students an opportunity to participate in a performance at the end of season.

Reef Beat is open to fifth grade students who are interested in percussion instruments and meet the requirement from an in-class drum play along session.  Members meet weekly on Tuesdays from 2:00-3:00 during late winter and spring seasons.  Members will learn the basics of playing with other members in a drum circle setting.  They will learn to play xylophones and several other percussion instruments to perform a variety of songs and sounds.  Members will be allowed to help make creative decisions while making music.  Reef Beat gives students an opportunity to participate in a performance at the end of the season.

Safe School Ambassadors are 4th and 5th grade students selected by their homeroom teachers. Teachers select 1-2 students that exhibit strong leadership skills and peer relational skills so that they can be trained by district staff and their supervisors on how to support and assist other students that are struggling with conflict during the school day in their classrooms and on campus.  These students support a positive school culture where they can model to other students and support other students and support other students when faced with conflicts and needing assistance before it escalates to needing teacher and/or administrative support.  Safe School Ambassadors meet with supervisors 5-6 times during the school year for training and collaboration. They meet after school from 2-3.  The strategies and skills this group is taught are skills that are useful at Coral Reef and skills that help them in life.  The Ambassadors model these relational skills that they have learned to their classmates and other students on campus to help create a more peaceful environment where students can work together to solve conflicts.

Coral Reef safety patrol selection occurs at the end of the 4th grade year.  4th grade students are selected by their 4th grade teachers. Those students selected have met the requirements during their 4th grade year to join. Teacher selection is based on a rubric that is shared with students and parents at the start of the year. Selection requirements include work habits, behaviors in the classroom and on campus, attendance/tardies, and leadership skills.  Safety Patrol is a privilege and students take great pride in being selected and becoming role models and leaders for the rest of the student body.  There is an optional field trip planned for safety patrols and also an end of the year celebration for all safety patrols in May to celebrate their success and service to their school.

The STEAM Club is open to third grade students and will be held throughout March and April. The STEAM Club will give students the opportunity to participate in hands-on and cooperative learning activities in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. They will get to complete fun and interactive STEAM related activities in the form of stations. Some of the devices they will get to use are: Ozobots, Code & Go Robot Mouse, Sphero, Little Bit Circuits, Botley Robots, Osmo, and more.

Mind Games is an enrichment program that helps students improve academic achievement through S.T.E.M. based game play. Each week students are introduced to a new, educational, SCREEN-FREE game. Students have shown that learning through play will expand cognitive abilities and assist in developing important life skills.

SUPERSTAR was established in 1999 and, since that time, has earned respect and trust within the community because of the quality of our camp programs. KidzArt is a drawing-centric art enrichment program that not only teaches children the art of drawing but also focuses on nurturing their confidence, expanding their creativity, and honing their problem-solving skills. We proudly collaborate with over 40 elementary schools throughout Palm Beach County, making it convenient to introduce KidzArt directly at your child's school premises. Our classes are scheduled weekly, immediately post-school, and conclude by 3:15pm.
